Youth American Grand Prix 2019 Teacher of the Year
Mariaelena Ruiz was a faculty member and rehearsal coach at The Rock School for Dance Education since 2001 when she was still dancing as a member of Suzanne Farrell Ballet.
She became the Rock School's Ballet Mistress in 2006, Ruiz danced with SFB from 2001-2006 , where she performed an all Balanchine repertoire. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Mariaelena began her early studies with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo’s Prima Ballerina , Nina Novak. under her tutelage she was coached and performed an extensive part of the classical repertoire, and, was trained by teachers from Kirov, Bolshoi ,Cuban and American training.
At 14, she became the youngest member of the Ballet Nacional de Caracas, under the direction of Vicente Nebrada. At 15, she won 3rd place at the USA International Ballet Competition, in Jackson, junior division, and received a full scholarship to continue her studies at the School of American Ballet. She won the 3rd place and Best Couple award at the Varna International Ballet Competition and the Prix Volinine in Paris. She has danced principal roles with Bay Ballet Theater, Cleveland San Jose Ballet, Carolina Ballet Theater, Ballet Hispanico, and has been a guest artist for many companies in the US and abroad. Ruiz has coached medalists for all the major competitions including Moscow IBC , Jackson USA IBC , Boston IBC , Prix de Lausanne, and Youth America Grand Prix. Ruiz has been a judge and guest teacher for Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) and has also worked with the New York International Ballet Competition.
Mariaelena was featured in the award winning Documentary FIRST POSITION , and in the Local WHYY Documentary made about the first Curtis Institute Rock School Collaboration in 2009 , Mariaelena was the most recent recipient of the Curtis Institute of Music Collaboration, in 2015, performed at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. In 2016 Mariaelena was named outstanding teacher at the ADC International Ballet Competition
New York City Ballet
Harrison Ball was born in Houston, Texas, and began his dance training at the age of four at The Charleston Ballet Theatre in South Carolina. Mr. Ball began studying at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, during the 2007 summer course and enrolled as a full-time student that fall. While at SAB, Mr. Ball performed in Jerome Robbins’ Fanfare for the Jerome Robbins Celebration in 2008. In June of 2011, he became an apprentice with NYCB, and in July of 2012, he joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet. Mr. Ball was promoted to soloist in February 2017.
Mr. Ball was a recipient of the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise in 2011 and was the 2013-14 Janice Levin Award honoree. He was also nominated for the 2015 Clive Barnes Foundation Award.
Encore Ballet Conservatory
Daniil Gaifullin is a graduate of the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Russia. At 18 years old after graduation he became a Principal Dancer with the Donetsk Opera and Ballet Theatre in the Ukraine. Upon his arrival to the USA, he was a Principal Dancer with Ballet Mississippi prior to his partnership with his wife, Stephanie. Together they had a wonderful career of a partnership on and off of the stage. Having the opportunity to perform principal roles as a couple from the classical repertoire, some Balanchine ballets, contemporary works and ballets that were created specifically for them as a couple.
Hehas also guest taught for various schools in the USA and was part of the guest faculty in 2010 International Ballet School of the USA IBC that is held every 4 years in Jackson,
Mississippi, in 2016 Principal guest artist with Illinois Dance Conservatory and after a seven
year absence from the stage, he and his wife were guest artists in 2 productions of
the ballet the Nutcracker.
In their teaching careers the have been Artistic Directors of the Lone Star Ballet, Owner/Directors of the Ballet Amarillo Academy, faculty members with the Tulsa Ballet Center for Dance Education and teachers/Co-Directors of the ballet program at Theatre Arts and master guest teachers throughout the years. They have had wonderful recognition throughout the years not only as artists but as teachers; their students receiving accolades and recognition!
Encore Ballet Conservatory
grew up in New Orleans She is an alumnus 0f the Nutmeg Ballet. As a result of the Prix de Lausanne, she was the first American to train on full
scholarship at the Stedelijk Instituut voor Ballet, directed by Madame Jos Brabants in Antwerpen,
Belgium with Maria Metchkarova from Kirov Ballet.
Ms. Murrish received private training from Maestro Celli, the protégé of Maestro Cecchetti, as well Donna Bonasera, Xenia Karakorum, Ballet Hysell, Nutmeg Ballet and was the first American to train at the Stedelijk Instituut voor Ballet on Full Scholarship in Antwerp, Belgium. She began her professional career with the Cincinnati Ballet achieving the rank of Soloist before her partnership with her husband, Daniil.
Their career as a Principal couple was with the Charleston Ballet Theatre, Sarasota Ballet, and Ballet de Santiago, while with these companies they had the opportunity to work with world renowned directors, ballet masters and choreographers. They are a ballet family and their son is a professional ballet artist.
KATHLEEN SINCLAIR is Co-Artistic Director of Ballet Yuma, a long-time member of The Ballet Alliance. Kathleen has taught for the past forty years and has specifically developed a syllabus for the first four years of a child’s ballet studies. She also created a pre-ballet syllabus for children three to six-year-old. During the 1980’s, she and her husband, Jon Cristofori, directed Yuma Ballet Theatre. Taking this small performing group to its first regional ballet festival in 1986, they built it into a Regional Dance America Honor company by 1990. In the fall of 1993, Jon and Kathleen opened their own ballet school, Yuma Ballet Academy in Yuma, Arizona and with a group of dedicated supporters organized Ballet Yuma. Their students have received numerous awards and scholarships and have or are dancing in professional companies today, including San Francisco Ballet, Les Grands Ballets de Canadiens de Montreal, Trey McIntyre Project, Houston Ballet, Texas Ballet Theatre, Louisville Ballet, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Ballet Memphis, Ballet San Jose, Ballet Idaho, Missouri Contemporary Ballet, City Ballet of San
Diego and Utah Regional Ballet. Kathleen is the Chairman of the
Board for The Ballet Alliance.
She served on the National Board for
Regional Dance America for many years. She has also served twice as a grant panelist for the Arizona Commission of the Arts
Kati Hanlon Mayo
Academy Artistic Coordinator
ati Hanlon Mayo began her dance training at The Boston School of Ballet under the direction of E. Virginia Williams and Violette Verdy. At the age of 15, she became a member of Boston Ballet 2 and performed regularly with The Boston Ballet. Kati joined The Charlotte Ballet, (then North Carolina Dance Theatre) as a principal dancer in 1992 and that same year, she was invited to become a member of The Chautauqua Ballet Company under the direction of Jean Pierre Bonnefoux & Patricia McBride. Kati has performed principal roles in ballets choreographed by George Balanchine, Alvin Ailey, Salvatore Aiello, William Forsythe, Paul Taylor, Agnes DeMille, Jacqueline Buglisi, Dwight Rhoden, Nacho Duato, Jose Mateo and Alonzo King. In 2000 and 2004,
Kati was named Best Performing Artist by Charlotte Magazine. The New York Times reviewed that she “ruled the stage with benign classical authority” and Dance Magazine heralded her as a “performer of stunning versatility and dramatic power.” Kati began teaching at the Charlotte Ballet Academy upon its inception in 1993. She is currently the Academy Artistic Coordinator and an instructor for the Advanced Division, Pre-Professional Division and the main company of Charlotte Ballet. She has been a guest teacher for The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Chautauqua Institution, Carolina Ballet Theatre and she is a repetiteur for the Salvatore Aiello Trust. Kati is a certified instructor of Dance for Parkinson’s Disease through The Mark Morris Dance Group and she also completed her instructor certification with Progressing Ballet Technique in 2016.
Ms. Iler began her training at the Toledo Ballet with Marie Vogt. She continued her training at several of the most prestigious ballet programs including the School of American Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov’s School of Classical Ballet, and the school for the American Ballet Theater, and San Francisco Ballet School. She then joined Miami City Ballet where she performed corps, soloists, and principal roles in numerous ballets. She has also danced with Richmond Ballet and Ballet
Met. Ms. Iler has been on faculty with the Miami City Ballet School, The Reston Conservatory Ballet, The Toledo Ballet, Ballet Theater of Toledo, and St. Louis Ballet School. In addition, she was the company ballet mistress for St. Louis Ballet, with Gen Horiuchi, where she rehearsed numerous Balanchine and classical ballets as well as works by Michael Uthoff and Christopher D’Amboise.
Four years ago, she was invited to join the full time faculty of Cary Ballet Conservatory (CBC). This school year she was appointed director of the CBC ballet program and associate artistic director of the CBC company. While at CBC, Ms. Iler has expanded the artistic opportunities for students by bringing in notable dance choreographers to set original choreography, training students for YAGP, and expanding the artistic vision and curriculum of CBC. Ms. Iler firmly believes that all dancers, regardless of age, skill or facility, deserve the best, most complete training available. This philosophy imparts to all the passion and joy of dance whether they are destined for a professional life, or simply one enriched with the love of movement.
The Ballet Clinic
David King was born in Busan, South Korea. He trained at the prestigious Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet under Marcia Dale Weary, and spent summers at many of the top ballet schools around the United States. Mr. King danced for various companies around the United States. He then received his BA and MFA from the University of Minnesota in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies in the Arts. Mr. King served as the founder and Artistic Director to Redlands Dance Theatre for two seasons.
After sustaining an injury, David focused on teaching, specifically teaching ballet for ethnic body types. Throughout his teaching career, he has taught master classes, workshops, and seminars at various levels of education. David has taught at some of the top schools around the world, and is known for his elite coaching and world class training for international competition winners, professional dancers and working professionals. David King is also the owner of A Ballet Education the number one ballet blog, and dance resource online.
rmando Luna began his training in Houston, Texas with Margo Marshall then with Soili Arvola and Leo Ahonen. His professional dance career spans 35 years. He danced professionally with Ballet Austin, BalletMet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, and Atlanta Ballet. He toured with Ballet Spectacular, performing with Rudolf Nureyev and Alexander Godunov and performed as a guest artist with Irish National Ballet and Ballet Arizona. He has partnered notable Ballerinas Cynthia Gregory and Marianna Tcherkassky. Since his retirement as a dancer from the Atlanta Ballet in 1998, he has continued to perform character roles in John McFall’s The Nutcracker, Michael Pink’s Dracula and Romeo and Juliet, Christian Holder’s Transcendence, Yuri Possokhov’s Don Quixote and Bruce Well’s Beauty and the Beast. Armando has been the principal teacher of the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education since 1998. Many of his students have moved on to dance professionally with Atlanta Ballet, New York City Ballet, Houston Ballet, Alabama Ballet, and Texas Ballet Theatre. As an award winning choreographer, he has worked in the US and Europe and has created over 50 works for the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education, ranging from Classical, Neoclassical, and Contemporary Ballets to story ballets such as Babar the Elephant, which was performed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. His ballets have been featured at Chautauqua Dance Salon, CPYB’s Choreoplan, Regional Dance America’s Festival Gala and JCM’s ArtCAN, to name a few. In addition, he has created works for many college dance programs which include Emory University, Texas Christian University, Goucher College, and Agnes Scott College. Armando received his BA in Dance from KSU in 2015 and is currently working with the classic rock band Kansas, choreographing a pas de deux danced to their famous song Dust In The Wind as the band plays live. This work premiered in Atlanta in 2018 to begin the Point of Know Return tour, then was performed in Nashville, and most recently in 2019 on the west coast. Armando is also in the planning stages of a collaborative project for Earth Day 2020, with his son, Dante Luna, who is a musician and composer in Los Angeles.
Beth McLeish is the Founder and Artistic Director of Project Ballet.
Mrs. McLeish began her ballet training at the Columbus Youth Ballet, under the direction of Shir Lee Wu, before continuing her studies at the Hartford Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and School of American Ballet. Ultimately chronic illness and injury kept her from fully pursuing a ballet career. After retiring from performance, Mrs. McLeish put herself through college by teaching ballet class at various small studios around the Midwest. By the time she had met and become engaged to her future husband (a Fort Wayne native) two things had become apparent: 1. There was absolutely nothing in this world she would rather do than teach ballet and 2. Northeast Indiana was in need of more training options for serious ballet students.
As a result, in the summer of 2004, Mrs. McLeish founded New American Youth Ballet in the basement of her home with eleven charter students. Fifteen years later that organization has grown into what is now know as Project Ballet, serving well over 350 students annually. Mrs. McLeish has led Project Ballet to become one of the foremost training grounds for classical dance in the country, with alumni dancing in the finest schools, universities and companies nationwide. She has been named Outstanding Teacher by the Youth America Grand Prix, has twice been a guest of honor at the School of American Ballet’s Teacher Symposium and has been an exclusive attendee at the Juilliard Teacher’s Summit.
Mrs. McLeish and her husband, Justin, have four children - Bobby (13), Lucy (10), Audrey (7) and Emily (3). They reside in historic Southwood Park and attend St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. As a homeschooling family, the McLeish’s spend much of their time exploring - they love to visit parks and museums, hike, travel, and attend concerts and performances. Her children have been raised in the halls of Project Ballet and it’s no surprise to anyone that Bobby attends the Academic Conservatory, Lucy and Audrey are members of the Training Program, and Emily already loves to wear a tutu.

Christopher is an accomplished ballet teacher and DTH Social Media Coordinator.
Brigham Young University Dance Faculty
Shayla Bott has taught for 24 years in private studios and in the University setting, including the University of Utah, Utah Valley University (UVU), and currently as an Associate Professor at Brigham Young University (BYU). Shayla has served as the Artistic Director of UVU’s Repertory Ballet Ensemble, BYU Ballet Showcase Company, and BYU Theatre Ballet. From the University of Utah, Shayla holds a BFA in ballet performance and an MFA in ballet with a focus on music, choreography, and pedagogy. After retiring from a professional career with Utah Metropolitan Ballet, she has continued to choreograph and teach in professional and academic venues. Shayla has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum. She has completed ballet technique teachers workshops from Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) and The Royal Ballet School Inspire program and was invited to teach at the 5-week CPYB summer intensive. Additionally, she is certified in Progressing Ballet Technique (Junior, Senior, and Advanced programs), and Stott Pilates Matwork and Reformer. Shayla’s choreography has won several choreographic awards including the Utah Metropolitan Ballet Choreography Design Competition (1st place in 2008, 2010, 2016, and 2nd place in 2012) and the National Choreographic Recognition Award from RDA in Montreal in 2012 for her work “Weaker”. She has set original works on CPYB, Ballet Arkansas, Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre, Idaho Regional Ballet, Utah Metropolitan Ballet, BYU Theatre Ballet, BYU Showcase Company, BYU Contemporary Dance Theatre, UVU’s Repertory Ballet Ensemble, Ballet West Summer Intensive students, the University of Utah Ballet Ensemble and on Shayla Bott & Company and Ballet Arkansas for Chop Shop contemporary dance festival in Bellevue, Washington. Ms. Bott is currently serving on the Board of Directors for The Ballet Alliance, an organization of pre-professional companies..

Since her auspicious debut at such an early age, she has performed with numerous major companies internationally, including Makarova and Company on Broadway, the Washington Ballet, America Ballet Theater II, Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet Chicago, Lyric Opera of Chicago (Principal Guest Dancer), and The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Meridith also served as Associate Director and Prima Ballerina of Ballet Theater of Chicago. She is known for her artistry, versatility, technical virtuosity, and her exquisite extensions, a particular gift that is without parallel. She and her husband Mario de la Nuez awarded 2018 YAGP "Best Teachers Award

The school has three spacious, fully equipped studios including state-of-the-art dance flooring. This facility allows the school to limit class size and offer a varied and expanded curriculum of both classical and contemporary dance styles.
Charleston Ballet Center for Dance students have participated in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). It is the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition that awards over $250,000 annually in scholarships to leading dance schools worldwide. The competition is held annually around the world and in New York City, and is open to dance students of all nationalities 9-19 years old.
The Artistic Team of Don & Patricia Cantwell and Jill Eathorne Bahr of the Charleston Ballet Center for Dance announce the creation of a new regional dance training program “Coastal Ballet USA. The new Coastal Ballet USA, complete with a new regional board, mission and goals, will be led by the artistic team of Don & Patricia Cantwell and Jill Eathorne Bahr will continue to offer educational programs and professional performances.

Native Charlestonian Don Cantwell returned from studies in New York in 1967 and formed the Charleston Civic Ballet, the predecessor of the professional company. He later married Patricia Downs, a ballerina who was discovered at age 13 by the legendary George Balanchine. Patricia taught in the school, danced all of the principal ballerina roles, and conceived the idea of a full-time professional ballet company for Charleston. Don and Patricia were joined by Jill Eathorne Bahr, one of the country’s foremost choreographers in 1987. Her acclaimed ballets are in the repertoires of Boston Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, and North Carolina Dance Theatre.
The company garnered and was given the licensing rights to perform the ballets of George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, and Jose Limon, the only South Carolina Company with this distinction. Although the CBT repertoire was rich with these masterpieces, the guiding forces for this prominent company was the eclectic, diverse creations of Jill Eathorne Bahr. Graduates of our school have gone on to perform with legendary dance companies such as the New York City Ballet.

A Class, Age 7 & 8
Preschool Division introduces students to the world of dance through music and movement. Designed to develop coordination, musicality and kinetic awareness. The social skills, awareness, and love for the arts that students develop at CBT will follow them throughout their lives. A prelude to formal ballet instruction, students will develop a foundation for ballet technique in a learning environment that fosters a love for dance and music. Class begins with warm-up exercises and floor stretches that develop flexibility and posture, followed by standing exercises which may be done at the ballet barre, and traveling steps to encourage development of gross motor skills. Students begin to learn French vocabulary, movement expression, and proper ballet etiquette in a non-competitive atmosphere. Through this class students will dance to a combination of classical, folk and traditional music

Students will learn the classical ballet vocabulary, proper placement, flexibility, and to accomplish correct dance movements. Students begin , learning the basic ballet positions, the progression of a standard ballet barre, and learning the French vocabulary that defines all ballet steps. The student moves into beginning centre work, away from the support of the ballet barre. When the student learns the ballet technique appropriate for each level and when the student's body has become strong enough to accomplish the movements taught, then at the discretion of the Artistic Director, the student moves to the next level where more intricate steps and combinations are introduced. Advancement is based on ability, not age. A Jazz/Tap class is also offered as an optional second weekly class for this division!

Serious students with a high interest in dance. These students are placed by faculty only. Students are expected to enjoy the challenge and to excel in their career-track classes. Often students are Included in the professional productions of CBT. Participation in these classes requires a minimum of 3 classes a week, with 5-7 classes expected for older students. No student who takes less than 3 classes per week will be allowed in pointe classes.

CHARLESTON BALLET YOUNG ARTISTS
This performing group provides professional performance opportunities to “elite students and aspiring young dancers”. This select group will meet twice a week with a primary focus training in ballet technique, choreographic study, and the art of performance with unique performance opportunities

The School's Policy for tuition or costume fees is "Requests for a refund must be made in writing and documentation from your physician must be submitted within 10 (ten) days of injury/illness"
